Pack the Essentials: The Ultimate Checklist for Boston Spectators

This past Monday I had the opportunity to watch my Mom run the Boston Marathon! One thing I learnt was that the spectators are the real superhero's at the race. Spectators spend all day on their feet cheering on every runner – from the first elite to finish the race, to the athletes in the last corral.

From this experience I now understand it’s vital for spectators to pack the essentials, in order to be prepared for the tough and demanding day they are about to endure. Here’s my go-to list of what every spectator needs to bring:

The Right Poster

After miles and miles, runner’s start to wonder why they signed up for this and how they’ll get through it. Spectators, this is where you come in. Making the perfect poster is crucial to giving them that push they need.

Need some inspo?

  • The inspirational sign: “If Trump can run, so can you”

  • The inspirational sign (2): “If Trump can win, so can you”

  • The comical sign: “It seems like you're doing a lot of work for a free banana”

GU

Who said GU was only for runners? As a spectator, you’ll be out all day and it’s vital for you to replenish any calories or glycogen you’ve used.

A Roller

With 10,000 runner’s passing by, you’ll have no opportunity to stop holding your poster high above your head. Sooth the soreness in your arms and enhance your range of motion by using a foam roller.

Anti-Chafe

At the Boston Marathon you’ll be a spectator amongst 100,000’s of others – so finding the perfect cheering spot will require some searching. Be proactive and use anti-chafe to avoid any blisters that may result from walking around to find that spot.

Post-Spectating Snacks

Banana’s, Gatorade, and protein shakes are all great choices to aid muscle repair and rebuild glycogen stores required after an intense day of spectating.

Throw-Away Clothes

You’ll be spending all day spectating, and the weather will change from morning to afternoon. Bring an old long sleeve or sweatpants to wear in the AM, to wear before your muscles are warmed up and while the temperature is low.

A Running Belt

You’ll need something with easy accessibility to store your phone, GU, Advil (to take if the cheering gives you a headache) and water bottle(s).
